These dogs were nearly exclusively owned by farmers but have been used as guard dogs on farms. The appearance of this dog breed didn’t change a lot. This dog was very often mixed with other Fruesian breeds. As from 1942 the Stabyhound dog received official recognition.
This dog breed is very popular in North America, Scandinavia and United Kingdom. The Stabyhound dog is an all-around working dog and apart from hunting, these dogs were used to guard property and to catch rats and moles.
Stabyhound dogs are both retrievers and pointers. They work very well on water. This is also a very powerful and sturdy dog, and it is interesting that larger Stabyhound dogs are even used to pull sleds in winter.
