Also called the Little River Duck Dog and the Yarmouth Toller, the breed’s odd name comes from its equally peculiar role in the hunt. A hunter concealed in a hide throws a stick along the bank, which the dog chases and retrieves silently but animatedly until this lures or “tolls” curious ducks or geese within range of the guns. The obedient Toller also acts as an efficient retriever.
