Mixed Breed Dogs – Crossbreed

There is an ongoing debate on whether mixed breed dogs make good pets or not. The answer is simple. A dog, whether a purebred, crossbreed or mixed breed, has the same natural instincts as any other dog. It is really up to the owners to care for and properly train a dog, so that good behavior and obedience is developed. Without training or socialization, purebreds are just as likely to develop bad habits and a poor temperament as mixed or crossbred dogs.

What exactly is a mixed breed dog?

In general terms, mixed breed dogs are dogs that do not belong to any particular breed and have an unknown ancestry. Popularly called a mutt, mongrel or a cur, these dogs are not a result of selective breeding and typically result without any human or artificial interference. Mixed breed canines are different from crossbreeds, as they are not created by breeding two purebreds of different breeds. These are also popularly referred to as hybrid dogs.

What is the lifespan of a mixed breed dog?

It is commonly believed that mixed breed dogs have a longer lifespan compared to purebred or crossbred dogs. Though there may be exceptions to this rule, it has been found that some mixed dogs can live up to 18 years of age, whereas on an average, purebred dogs do not usually live past 15 years of age.

Are mixed breeds healthier?

A lot of people claim that mixed breed dogs have fewer health problems compared to purebred or crossbred dogs. This is because purebred dogs are only bred within their gene pool, increasing the risks of inheriting a genetic disease. However, diet, exercise, medical care, and other factors play an important role in the dog’s health. Even if a dog is not predisposed to certain conditions, its health may still be at risk, if the proper care is not provided.

Appearance and Personality

Mixed breed dogs are unique, with no one having the same personality or appearance. This is something that  makes them special because the options are endless. Discovering a mixed breed dog’s personality is always a joy, especially when you’re surprised by things such as their ability to adapt quickly to new environments.

Owning a mixed breed dog is something to be proud of, especially when they’ve made a name for themselves, whether it be serving their country or providing entertainment. Some of the most famous mutts include; Bobbie, Sinbad, Spike, Higgins, and Laika.
