French Spaniel is originally considered to be the main species among all long-bristle pointers which in its name have Spaniel. French Spaniel is in many ways reminiscent of the English Springer Spaniel and King Charles Spaniel. It is believed that its ancestors originated from Spain, as well as French and English Spaniel.

French Spaniel is mentioned as a descendant of dogs described by Gaston Febus and which were used in the Middle Ages. These dogs were imported to France from England in the 14th century.

From 16 century the French Spaniel was a valuable assistant to nobleman who went to hunt birds. Later his popularity spread throughout Europe. In the 18th century is still a very popular dog for hunting partridges and pheasants, and in the next period, its popularity declined with the rise in popularity of English dogs.

The first breed standard was introduced in 1891by James De Connick ‘s. Over time, this has changed for several times until 1986 when the Committee on Standards FCI accepted the French Spaniel under number 175. Though it was very popular in France for this dog is almost not known outside of France.

French Spaniel is a methodical and persistent hunter. In hunting, this is a good retriever who is not afraid of cold water. The French Spaniel is quiet and obedient, but also very sensitive and easily gets angry.

Because of the affection and tenderness towards children, it is widely accepted as a pet. This elegant dog is strong, but not heavy. In it you will find the combination of elegance and sports properties. His head is elongated and strong with a round skull, slightly convex officials and a pronounced stop. Low set ears are long, curved, and with wavy silky hair. The eyes are large, dark amber color, mild and with intelligent look. The coat is long, soft, straight or slightly wavy, thinner on the head than the body. The top coat is white, with small or large patches of brown, but too many brown spots are not desirable.
The French Spaniel dog is very happy to go hunting, it is very durable and one of the dogs who needs physical activity. If you are not able to go hunting or otherwise have no ambition in this direction then you must provide him with other opportunities for mobility. Most specimens of this breed loves to swim and fetch thrown items.
