Broholmer or Danish dog, as its name suggests, originates from Denmark. This breed has been known since the Middle Ages when it was used for hunting. Later it was used mainly as a watchdog of large farms and estates. These dogs were used to manage large herds of cattle to the market and are often called butcher’s dogs.

By the end of the eighteenth century, the breed Broholmer was extremely clean (without mixing with other breeds ), thanks to the royal breeder Sehestedu of Broholma, by whom this breed got it’s original name (Broholmer). In the past Broholmers attracted the attention of kings and artists. Very often we can see them on many portraits of Danish kings. King Frederik VII had several Broholmers which indicates that this dog was the favorite of the aristocracy.

By the end of World War II this breed was almost extinct, but these dogs were rescued by a group of dedicated people who founded the Society for the Protection of Broholmers. Thanks to Jytte Weiss who was very interested in reviving the Broholmers, the breed is saved.

Poor prevalent outside of Denmark, which is the country of its origin, this shepherd, who is practically unknown in France, belongs to a very old Danish breed. It is nowadays used for keeping livestock and farms.

The Broholmers are strong dogs and are admired for their waking eyes, their courage and their feeling for obedience. Some dogs can be aggressive. Within the family Broholmers have a very good character.

Their head is slightly bent, the snout is powerful, lips are drawn, eyes are round, black or dark amber. Small ears are set fairly high. Broholmers have very powerful paws and are able to quietly move. They carry their tail in the shape of the sword. Broholmer has a short and thick hair. The hair color is ginger or black with a black mask. White spots on the chest, legs and tail tip are permitted as well.

Broholmer has a calm temperament and good nature. This dog breed is outgoing and friendly, but very careful. It is necessary to begin socialization while still a puppy to get him used to other dogs and people. Their natural instinct requires a hierarchy of violence. It is necessary that all family members are hierarchically above the dog. This is the only way that your Broholmer is good and well behaved. Broholmers are in need of daily physical effort. A walk two times a day for a minimum of 15 minutes is definitely a necessity for this dog breed.
