Top 10 Most Popular Dog Breeds 2013

Almost everyone has an opinion about what breed of dog is the best, but nobody can argue with the American Kennel Club’s list of most popular dogs. Each year, the AKC comes out with a list of the most popular breeds based on registrations from the previous year. The AKC’s 2013 list came out in January, and there is little in the way of surprises as most breeds have remained on the list year after year.

10. Dachshund

The Dachshund rounds out the top ten list at number ten. These dogs have long bodies and short legs. They can be short haired, wire haired or long haired, and they come in a wide variety of colors. The breed is known to be wary with strangers and may not do so well with small children. However, they are generally curious, clever, loyal, and devoted little dogs that are loved by many.

9. Rottweiler

This is the second year that the Rottweiler has ranked in the top ten AKC list. Rottweilers are often referred to as “gentle giants,” as they are big dogs with a kind heart. They can be territorial though, but it is nothing socialization and training can’t take care of. A large, open area is also ideal, so that they can play and exercise as they please.

8. Poodle

The Poodle is the eighth most popular dog breed, and there is good reason for it. They are highly intelligent dogs, making training very easy to do. On a less positive note, they do need a lot of exercise and require frequent grooming in order to keep them healthy and content. Nevertheless, they make great family dogs and are well worth the work.

7. Boxer

The Boxer is a smart and playful dog that is often considered to be the perfect example of what a household pet should be like. They have an almost human-like personality, and do require a lot of time and attention to fulfill their mental and exercise needs.

6. Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkshire Terriers, otherwise known as Yorkies, are small, friendly companion dogs, weighing in at around 7 to 8 pounds as adults. They have a long, luxurious coat that requires daily brushing and frequent grooming. However, thanks to their size, this does not usually take long. Their stature also makes them ideal for apartment living.

5. Bulldog

Bulldogs have become more popular over the past several years, possibly because of their adorable, wrinkly faces and kind, courageous personalities. These dogs can be considered high-maintenance, as their skin may become irritated if not cleaned on a regular basis, but as far as exercise goes, they are happy being couch potatoes.

4. Beagle

The Beagle has short hair, is compact in size, and has a happy, easygoing nature. As a hunting breed, they do need to be exercised daily to prevent energy outbursts, but activity is especially important because the breed is prone to weight gain.

3. Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are large breed dogs, best known for their sweet nature and excellent hunting abilities. They have a long, dense golden colored coat that helps keep them warm in cold weather, but it can also be a lot of work when it comes to grooming.

2. German Shepherd

Even as the second most popular dog breed, German Shepherds are not for everyone. They need significant training, exercise and one-on-one time. If given these things consistently, they can be one of the most wonderful family pets. However, they are a very intelligent and active breed that needs constant mental and physical stimulation to keep them healthy and happy.

1. Labrador Retriever

The most popular dog breed is the Labrador Retriever, as it has been since 2002. Labs are friendly, intelligent, and playful dogs that love to swim, hunt,  and take part in any other activities that involve spending quality time with their family. They have short coats that easy to groom, and come in a black, yellow, or chocolate color.
