Hairlessness is a genetic accident, perpetuated through careful breeding. Dogs similar to the Peruvian Inca Orchid, living in the homes of Inca nobility, were described by the first Spanish explorers to enter the Inca empire in the 1500s. Almost extinct by the early 20th century, the breed was rescued from oblivion by US breeders.
