The national dog of Ireland, the Kerry Blue, or Irish Blue, has been used for ratting and hunting in the far southwest of Ireland since the 18th century; it was recognized in 1922. Today it is still used in hunting, and makes a fine guard dog, but is more often found as an energetic household companion. Exercise and grooming demands of this breed are high. The non-shedding, curly coat mats, especially the luxuriant beard, and also needs regular clipping. Born black, their coat lightens at between nine months and two years.
