Braque du Bourbonnais dogs were first described in the time of Renaissance. At some point this breed was threatened with disappearance, but they thrived after World War I and the first club of Braque du Bourbonnais dog’s enthusiasts was created back in 1925. Their country of origin is France.

But after the World War II in the period between 1963 and 1973 there were no registries of Braque du Bourbonnais dogs, most probably because of a selection of secondary characteristics instead on focusing on the hunting capabilities and overall general construction of the dog.

Around 1907s, there were attempts to search for the last dog with some Braque du Bourbonnais blood. However, only mixed breeds were found that had just a couple of characteristics of the Braque du Bourbonnais dogs. After a couple of inbred litters the first Bourbonnais was registered on the LOF around 1975 and since that moment other breeders joined as well, while creating their own lines of the same dog breed.

Back in the 1981s the Club du Braque du Bourbonnais was recreated. And in 1988, the first Bourbonnais was introduced in the USA.

The Braque du Bourbonnais dogs are available in two different coat colors – liver and fawn. This dog breed has spots all over the body and the spots are tolerated as long as they are not bigger than the palm of the hand, and on the head the two eyes mustn’t be inside one same spot.

Females are generally thinner than males, and more elegant. This dog breed is very recognizable because of their short tail, and the gene that is responsible for this is the same gene that the Brittany Spaniel dog breeds carry.

The Braque du Bourbonnais dogs are god tempered and very intelligent dogs. This is a hunter dog breed. They are very active, playful and enjoy in the company of humans, especially their owner.
